ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Level 1 Recertification (1-DAY)
2024-2025 ACI/MCA Level 1 REcertification (1-DAY)
- The class will begin at 8:30 am.
- The Recertification is for any staff or technicians who have previously passed the ACI/MCA Concrete Technician Grade 1 Course. THIS IS A CLASS FOR EXPERIENCED TESTER. STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACI/MCA SPECIFICATIONS FOR RECERTIFICATION!
- This is a single-day recertification. There will be a short review of the material (approximately 4 hours in the morning) following lunch students will take all 3 exams (MCA open book exam, ACI closed book exam, and ACI practical exam)
- PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE IS ONLY A SHORT TIME IN THE LAB TO PRACTICE THE FIELD TESTS IN THE MORNING. Come prepared to test concrete – safety boots or shoes, clothes that you don’t mind getting concrete on, and safety glasses if you want. Gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
- The Recertification sessions will be limited to 22 students.
- The MCA will provide disposable gloves/masks to students who choose to use them.
- Each student will receive their classroom materials including the ACI Technician workbook (CP-1) and MCA Fundamentals binder 2 weeks before the exam.
- We will cover the ACI closed-book and practical exams briefly, but we would encourage anyone wanting a more thorough review to see the link below. PLEASE REVIEW THE MCA FUNDAMENTALS BINDER. THE MATERIAL HAS BEEN UPDATED!
- Lunch will be provided. Pre-packaged snacks and beverages will be available.

LEVEL I CONCRETE FIELD TESTING CERTIFICATION
Level 1 Technicians conducting concrete testing for public and private projects must be certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician in accordance to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), ASTM C94, ASTM C1077 and ACI specifications.
Course content for Level I is established by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and MDOT.
Students pursuing Level I certification will be trained through a combination of classroom and laboratory instruction covering the following ASTM test specifications:
Sampling (C172) | Temperature (C1064) | Slump (C143) | Density (C138) | Concrete Cylinders (C31) | Air content-volumetric (C173) | Air content-pressure (C231)
In addition to these specifications, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of concrete including materials, curing, hot/cold weather concreting and water/cement ratio calculations.
ADVANCE PREPARATION
Technicians with little or no testing experience can prepare for attendance at a Level I class with the information below:
1.Review the MCA demonstration videos (see yellow button above) of the procedures for performing the seven ASTM Level I field test.
LEVEL I EXAM
Participants must successfully complete the following examinations in order to become certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician:
1. Michigan Fundamentals Examination
A 30 minute, “open book” exam consisting of 20 multiple choice questions covering the fundamentals of concrete. Students must score 70% or higher to pass.
2. ACI written Examination
A one hour, “closed book” exam consisting of 55 multiple choice questions based on the seven field tests for concrete. Students must attain an overall score of 70% or higher and 60% or higher on each of the seven field tests to pass.
3. ACI Performance Examination
This exam consists of a verbal description of sampling procedures and a performance exam for the remaining six field tests. Students must successfully pass all seven performance tests.
