As the first new elementary building in Kelloggsville Public Schools to be built in decades, the new Central elementary school broke ground in 2020 and was recently completed in late October 2021. The building hosts students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, and features 19 general education classrooms, three special education classrooms, lockers for every student, a gym, a standalone cafeteria, a large media center, enhanced safety and security features, central air conditioning, and a second floor that will house art and music rooms, as well as science labs.

The floors are a showpiece, especially for those of us that tend to look down rather than at eye level. Consumers Concrete supplied two different polished concrete mixes, one for the 4-inch-thick floor areas and another for the curved seat wall and staircase, which are both located near the main front entrance.

Burgess Concrete Construction’s crews placed the floors with flatness in mind so that an even aggregate exposure of Class 3 was achieved after their polishing crews came back in to grind and make them shine. This was achieved even in the long, narrow hallways where floor flatness can be difficult to achieve the uniform look.

The vertical polishing required on the foyer seat wall needed to blend in with the full aggregate exposure of the floor, given that the two different mixtures had different maximum aggregate sizes. The curved staircase with polished concrete stair treads is a statement piece for this brand-new educational facility that was designed to assist with educating some of Michigan’s best and brightest students.
