ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Certification

2023/2024 ACI AGGREGATE TESTING TECHNICIAN (ATT)

Please review the class schedule and recommendations below.

  1. The class will begin at 8:30 am and end at 4:00 pm on day one.
  2. This is a certification course and not a complete training class. Students are expected to be familiar with the course material and how to perform the tests before arriving to the certification course.
  3. The first day of class will be a review of the ASTMs followed by a laboratory practice session. Students who don’t regularly work in an aggregate laboratory environment should do a thorough review of the materials and test methods.
  4. Come prepared to test aggregates – safety boots or shoes, clothes that you don’t mind getting dirt and dust on, safety glasses if you want. Gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
  5. The sessions will be limited to 12 students.
  6. The MCA will be providing disposable masks and gloves to each student for those who choose to use them.
  7. Each student will receive their classroom materials including the ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 Certification manual 2 weeks before the exam.
  8. Day 2 will be the written and practical exam. Day 2 should end around 12 pm.
  9. Lunch will be provided for day 1. Pre-packaged snacks and beverages will be available.

PLEASE NOTE- THIS CERTIFICATION IS FOR LAB TECHNICIANS THAT NEED TO COMPLY WITH ASTM 1077 OR AASHTO LAB REQUIREMENTS FOR PERFORMING AGGREGATE TESTING. THIS COURSE DOES NOT CERTIFY TECHNICIANS TO PERFORM AGGREGATE QA TESTS FOR MDOT PROJECTS.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Introduced by ACI in 2007, the Aggregate Testing Technician (ATT) – Level I Certification was developed to certify laboratory technicians in the sampling and testing of concrete aggregates.
Certification assures owners, specifiers and other interested parties that the testing of aggregate is conducted by the qualified laboratory personnel.

The course covers the following AASHTO aggregate test methods:
T2 Sampling of Aggregates
T11 Materials Finer than No. 200 Sieve
T85 Specific Gravity & Absorption of Course Aggregate
T255 Total Evaporable Moisture Content by Drying
T248 Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Test Size
T27 Sieve Analysis of Fine & Coarse Aggregates
T84 Specific Gravity & Absorption of fine Aggregate
T21 Test for Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregate

Course Overview

On day one, the eight AASHTO standards are reviewed through a combination of classroom and laboratory instruction. On day two, students complete written and performance exams demonstrating their knowledge of the test methods. The ATT certification meets the requirement of ASTM C1077 “Standard Practice for Laboratories Testing Concrete and Concrete Aggregates for use in Construction.”

Exam

The “open book” written exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions divided into eight sections. Each section covers an individual AASHTO standard. Passing requires a minimum overall score of 70% AND a minimum score of 60% on each individual standard. Students have two hours to complete the written exam.

For the performance exam, students are evaluated on their ability to correctly perform the required procedures for each of the AASHTO standards.

Note: Students successfully passing both the ACI CST and ACI ATT certifications will also receive ACI's Laboratory Testing Technician - Grade I Certification.
