DETROIT ASSEMBLY COMPLEX BSR TRACK

Location: Mack Assembly Plant - Detroit, MI
Concrete Contractor
: Angelo Iafrate
Concrete Supplier: SRM
Design Engineer: PEA Group
Owner: Stellantis

Every vehicle that rolls off the assembly line at the Stellantis Mack Assembly Plant gets driven and tested on the Buzz Squeak Rattle (BSR) test track. Automotive manufacturers want to be sure that your new vehicle won’t have that annoying squeak in the back of the car, or the rattling glove compartment noise that will make you want to bring it back to the dealer to find the source of the problem.

The BSR test track at Mack Assembly is enclosed to protect it from the elements but is not climate controlled. To ensure completion for the reopening of the Assembly Plant, the project schedule required winter construction practices. Iafrate installed artificial heat, temporary lighting, along with auxiliary air circulation to maintain minimum temperatures, appropriate light levels, and removal of carbon monoxide for a safe work environment.

Iafrate crews were required to place each item of the ten different track events at the required location and elevation, within a ¼” vertical and ½” lateral tolerance. The 8-inch-thick concrete slab was then placed surrounding those cast-in-place “bumps,” resulting in a test track that will expose any of the potential noisy items in all of the brand new vehicles that roll off the line at the Mack Assembly Plant.
