GVSU PEDESTRIAN MALL

Location: Mt. Vernon Ave. & Fulton St. - Grand Rapids, MI
Concrete Contractor: Vanlaan Concrete Construction
Concrete Supplier: Grand Rapids Gravel Company
Engineer: Fishbeck
Owner: Grand Valley State University

As a part of efforts to revitalize their Pew Grand Rapids Campus, Grand Valley State University went ahead with transforming the defunct Mount Vernon Avenue into an exceptional pedestrian campus, featuring a decorative concrete pedestrian pathway (with tables and benches), green space, and a bike trail. Additional features included a plaza area with raised planters, seat walls, art walls, and green space for student recreation and university events.

It took nearly 5,100 square yards (843 cubic yards) of 6-inch concrete pavement for VanLaan Concrete Construction and Grand Rapids Gravel Company to construct the pathway. Eye-catching features such as multiple textures and colors, a unique jointing design to cohesively blend with paver designs, and natural greenery completely change the look of the area. This distinguished pathway also connects four GVSU buildings that were previously disjointed by the old brick-paved Mount Vernon Avenue: Peter F. Secchia Hall, Winter Hall, the L. William Seidman Center, and the Bicycle Factory. The revitalized Pew Campus should have no issue enhancing campus life downtown and attracting prospective students for years to come.
