The Esther Williams swimming pool at the Grand Hotel was originally built in the mid-1920s and was later named after the actress and competitive swimmer who starred in the 1947 movie, This Time for Keeps, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel. But at 100 years of age, the pool was in need of an upgrade. To accomplish this without interfering with summer guests, contractors had to complete all of the demolition, excavation, foundation, installation, and finishing work in only 32 weeks during a harsh northern Michigan winter.

Streeter Brothers had two contracts to complete almost all of the concrete work required for the new pool, including the clubhouse and site concrete. After Labor Day 2020, mobilization of equipment and supplies began, and work started on October 1. All material, equipment, personnel, and supplies had to utilize ferries and barges to make it to the island, and horses to make it to the hotel from the dock. This includes the 2,000 pre-packaged bags of concrete, which consisted of ¾ of a cubic yard of pre-mixed dry ingredients. Streeter Brothers used on-site small mobile mixers to combine the bags with water to ensure a consistent local supply of material for their work.

Work continued through the winter and spring months, with concrete pours for foundations, walls, the pool itself, and eventually the flatwork surrounding the pool. After 7 months of work, the new pool was completed 6 hours before the deadline of April 30, 2021, at midnight.
