Red Oaks Waterpark has long been the center of enjoyment for families looking to cool off throughout Oakland County. Adding to the long list of fun features came the recent addition of its very own children’s Splash Pad.

With a combination of 29 different spray element features, multiple drains, and a complicated location just inside of the park’s lazy river, this proposed splash pad provided no easy feat for all parties involved in its design and construction. Due to outdated water features in the proposed area, nearly 20,000 square feet of existing concrete had to be removed to make way for the 6-inch-thick 18,000 square feet splash pad.

The site was located within an existing lazy river feature, which acted as a sort of moat, surrounding the proposed pad. A special earth ramp was created for equipment and material access as well as protection of the lazy river feature itself. All of the flatwork required a concrete pump for placement, and tooled joints were utilized throughout the pad.

Oakland County Parks and Rec required that the new concrete surface match the existing perimeter and be adjusted to provide drainage within the new basin. It was a significant challenge to adjust the slopes to keep the surface within ADA restrictions for all area drains as well.

To add to the difficulty, the project was completed in November and December 2020, requiring blankets and other cold protection throughout construction. All efforts and challenges were well worth it though, as families can enjoy this wonderful splash pad that kids will enjoy for decades to come.
