Online ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Level 1 Certification

2021-2022 ONLINE ACI/MCA Level 1 certification (new Cert & recert)

The MCA has modified the way in which it will be delivering Level I certification classes for 2021/2022. We will be offering different types of classes for people to have more choice in the type of learning experience they would like.

  1. Due to continuing pandemic concerns, all classes will be held at the MCA Training Center located at 3130 Pine Tree, Lansing. Class will begin at 8am.
  2. The Online Certification class is suitable for all types of technicians. Whether getting certified for the first time or recertifying. This class allows the student to spend less time in Lansing and is probably a good choice for people who have to travel long distances.
  3. The first day of class will be a virtual format and utilize Zoom to cover the Michigan Fundamentals (open-book exam) material. Lab Practice and Exam days will remain in person.
  4. The Lab Practice Day of class will cover the ACI (closed-book exam) materials followed by hands-on practice of the test methods. Please come prepared to test concrete – safety boots or shoes, clothes that you don’t mind getting concrete on, safety glasses if you want. Gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
  5. Virtual training classes will be limited to 64 attendees. Lab practice and exam sessions will be limited to groups of sixteen (16). Monday of the online certification will be a zoom webinar. Students will then be assigned an AM or PM session for the practice and exam days. Either Tuesday (practice day) and Wednesday (exam day) or Thursday (practice day) and Friday (exam day).
  6. Student substitutions will be permitted. Switching classes, however, will not be permitted unless the company is switching two students between classes.
  7. The MCA will be providing disposable masks and gloves to each student. Masks will be worn inside the facility if you have not been vaccinated. Hand sanitizing stations will be set up throughout the building. Six-foot social distancing will be encouraged while inside the facility.
  8. Each student will receive their classroom materials including the ACI Technician workbook (CP-1) and MCA Fundamentals binder 2 weeks before the virtual training begins.
  9. Each Practice Day and Exam Day will be approximately half-day sessions. No Lunch will be provided. Pre-packaged snacks and beverages will be available.

We highly encourage students to complete ACI’s Level I Field Testing Technician eLearning program for an extra level of preparation. ACI University (concrete.org) or contact Clare Hiltz (clare.hiltz@concrete.org 248-848-3700) for more information and instructions on how to use the eLearning program. (Please be aware the ACI eLearning program is NOT included in the MCA certification class. There will be additional separate costs)

LEVEL I CONCRETE FIELD TESTING CERTIFICATION

Level 1 Technicians conducting concrete testing for public and private projects must be certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician in accordance to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), ASTM C94, ASTM C1077 and ACI specifications.

Course content for Level I is established by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and MDOT.

Students pursuing Level I certification will be trained through a combination of classroom and laboratory instruction covering the following ASTM test specifications:

Sampling (C172)  |  Temperature (C1064)  |  Slump (C143)  |  Density (C138)  |  Concrete Cylinders (C31)  |  Air content-volumetric (C173)  |  Air content-pressure (C231)

In addition to these specifications, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of concrete including materials, curing, hot/cold weather concreting and water/cement ratio calculations.

ADVANCE PREPARATION

Technicians with little or no testing experience can prepare for attendance at a Level I class in one of two ways:
1.Review the MCA demonstration videos (see yellow button above) of the procedures for performing the seven ASTM Level I field test.

LEVEL I EXAM

Participants must successfully complete the following examinations in order to become certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician:

A 90 minute, “open book” exam consisting of 50 multiple choice questions covering the fundamentals of concrete. Students must score 70% or higher to pass.

2. ACI written Examination
A one hour, “closed book” exam consisting of 55 multiple choice questions based on the seven field tests for concrete. Students must attain an overall score of 70% or higher and 60% or higher on each of the seven field tests to pass.
