The MCA has modified the way in which it will be delivering Level I certification classes for 2021/2022. We will be offering different types of classes for people to have more choice in the type of learning experience they would like.
We highly encourage students to complete ACI’s Level I Field Testing Technician eLearning program for an extra level of preparation. or contact Clare Hiltz ( 248-848-3700) for more information and instructions on how to use the eLearning program. (Please be aware the ACI eLearning program is NOT included in the MCA certification class. There will be additional separate costs)
If you have questions please contact our office at 800.678.9622/517.347.7720 or email Lisa Clegg at LCLEGG@MICONCRETE.NET

Level 1 Technicians conducting concrete testing for public and private projects must be certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician in accordance to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), ASTM C94, ASTM C1077 and ACI specifications.
Course content for Level I is established by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and MDOT.
Students pursuing Level I certification will be trained through a combination of classroom and laboratory instruction covering the following ASTM test specifications:
Sampling (C172) | Temperature (C1064) | Slump (C143) | Density (C138) | Concrete Cylinders (C31) | Air content-volumetric (C173) | Air content-pressure (C231)
In addition to these specifications, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of concrete including materials, curing, hot/cold weather concreting and water/cement ratio calculations.
Technicians with little or no testing experience can prepare for attendance at a Level I class in one of two ways:
1.Review the MCA demonstration videos (see yellow button above) of the procedures for performing the seven ASTM Level I field test.
Participants must successfully complete the following examinations in order to become certified as a Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician:
1. Michigan Fundamentals Examination
A 90 minute, “open book” exam consisting of 50 multiple choice questions covering the fundamentals of concrete. Students must score 70% or higher to pass.
2. ACI written Examination
A one hour, “closed book” exam consisting of 55 multiple choice questions based on the seven field tests for concrete. Students must attain an overall score of 70% or higher and 60% or higher on each of the seven field tests to pass.
3. ACI Performance Examination
This exam consists of a verbal description of sampling procedures and a performance exam for the remaining six field tests. Students must successfully pass all seven performance tests.
