As with any construction project on airport property, accomplishing the task at hand without disrupting operations is critical. In this case, Delta’s cargo facility at Detroit Metro had to remain in full operation during the entire rehabilitation of the apron area on the airside portion of the cargo building.

The pavement was placed for this project on all sides of the facility to accommodate parking, docking, and storage. Construction consisted of 11,500 square yards of 3½ inch concrete overlay and 5,870 square yards of new 10-inch concrete pavement. All pavement was finished with a laser screed.

Iafrate kept open and constant communication with SOMAT Engineering and Delta airlines to not disrupt operations. Both landside truck docks and the airside cargo areas were completed in multiple stages to allow the uninterrupted flow of cargo through the facility. Airside work required coordination with Delta Airlines, DTW security, and U.S. Customs to ensure that International cargo operations were not compromised.

With the apron area on the airside now capable of managing heavy equipment usage, load transfers, and material drop-offs, Delta shouldn’t have any issues managing cargo for the foreseeable future on this durable concrete overlay.
