Directory of Certified Technicians
Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), ASTM C94, ACI 318 and other industry standards require that technicians performing acceptance tests for concrete be certified with respect to the following seven ASTM specifications:
- Concrete cylinders (C31)
- Density (C138)
- Slump (C143)
- Sampling (C172)
- Air content-volumetric (C173)
- Air content-pressure (C231)
- Temperature (C1064)
In addition to these tests, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of concrete including materials, water/cement ratio, curing and hot/cold weather concreting.
The Level I course is 3 days in length - 2 days of comprehensive instruction/laboratory training followed by an examination day. Certification requires passing three exam components - two written exams and a performance exam.
Certification is valid for a 3 year period.
Level I Exam
Written Exam
The Level I certification contains two written exams.
- Part I - ACI (Closed Book)
The ACI written exam consists of 55 multiple choice questions based on the seven ASTM tests. Students have 60 minutes to complete the exam. An overall score of 70%, including a minimum score of 60% on each individual test standard is required to pass. - Part II - Michigan (Open Book)
The Michigan written exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions based on the fundamentals of concrete. Students have 90 minutes to complete the exam with a minimum score of 70% required to pass.
Performance Exam
The ACI performance exam requires the student to correctly demonstrate their ability to perform each of the seven ASTM tests.

"Exam Only" Option: Individuals are allowed to register for a Level I exam without attending two day training course.

Recognition
Level I Technicians will receive a certificate/wallet card from the MCA and a certificate/wallet card from the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Level I Technicians will have their name published on the MCA website: Directory of Certified Technicians. In addition, Level I Technicians will be listed on the ACI Website.

Level I Complete Course and Exam
The following fees include breaks, lunch each day, classroom textbooks and all exam materials. Lodging and travel related expenses are not included.

The following fees are for exam only students that do not want to attend the two day Level I class. Fees do not include textbooks and classroom materials.

*Students must provide proof that they are currently enrolled as a full-time student.

Cancellation Policy
- 20 or more calendar days before class at 20% fee
- 10-19 calendar days before class at 35% fee
- Within 10 calendar days of class at 50% fee
- There are no refunds for no shows.
Confirmation of Registration
Upon receipt of your registration, a confirmation postcard or e-mail will be sent. Approximately 2-3 weeks prior to your class date, a confirmation letter with directions, hotel information and textbooks will be shipped via UPS.
