Overview
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. Local agencies that fail to comply with ADA standards when building pedestrian facilities could open themselves up to litigation. In this hands-on workshop, experts from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Michigan Concrete Association, along with industry consultants, will cover proper design, planning, and construction procedures for complying with ADA requirements. Instructors will also explain what inspectors look for in compliance inspections to make it easier for agencies to review their own infrastructure for compliance.
Why Attend?
Compliance with ADA standards is an essential consideration for any construction project because people with disabilities rely on well designed, detectable boundaries and transitions to move around on roads and sidewalks. Contractors and Inspectors need to be aware of these standards so that municipal infrastructure remains compliant. If public roads, sidewalks, driveways, and the transitions between them do not comply with ADA standards, owning agencies may be held liable for accidents or injuries.
